Founded in 1914 as Texas' first mining school, the University of Texas at El Paso has since evolved into a major public research institution. Its research endowment places it among the flagship institutions in the University of Texas (UT) system. The University of Texas at El Paso is the only research and doctoral degree institution in the nation to host a predominately Mexican-American student body. This cultural distinction, reinforced by the campus' location on the Mexico-U.S. border, creates unique academic programs and opportunities for international exchange. UTEP is a national leader in areas such as Hispanic health, Hispanic education issues, and homeland security.UT El Paso's tradition of minority access to higher education also extends to the African-American community. In the mid-50s, the university became the first Southern college to integrate its athletic program; a decade later, UTEP made history when an all-black lineup led the basketball team to a NCAA victory. A symbol of Civil Rights-era racial unity, UTEP continues its heritage of multicultural academic excellence today.
